New FMC-520 Digital-to-Analog Converter Mezzanine Card Delivers Quad Channel 500MSPS or Dual Channel 1 GSPS Output

HIGH WYCOMBE, UK – October 14, 2009 -- Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Computing, a leading designer and manufacturer of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) VME, VPX, VXS, and CompactPCI products for the aerospace and defense (A&D) market, has introduced a new FPGA Mezzanine Card (FMC/VITA 57) module, the FMC-520 DAC dual/quad channel digital-to-analog converter (DAC) card, that can support up to four analog output channels updating at 500MSPS or two analog output channels at 1.0GSPS. The card is designed for use in demanding Military applications such as Electronic Counter Measures (ECM), Software Defined Radio (SDR) and Radar that require high-speed ADC and DAC components. The FMC-520 speeds and simplifies the integration of FPGAs into embedded system designs. The low latency, high-bandwidth module eliminates data bottlenecks to increase DSP subsystem performance by routing the high-speed DAC I/O directly to the host board’s FPGAs via the FMC connector. It complements Curtiss-Wright Controls’ growing family of high-speed ADC FMC cards, including the recently announced ADC511, ADC512, and ADC513, providing a complete ADC/DAC solution for DSP applications.

“Our new high-bandwidth FMC-520 DAC, combined with our comprehensive family of ADC FMC cards, establishes Curtiss-Wright Controls as a market leader in bringing the full range of analog input, processing, and output to rugged deployed COTS systems,” said Lynn Patterson, vice president and general manager Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Computing. “Our growing family of FMC FPGA I/O mezzanine cards significantly speeds and simplifies the use of FPGAs in rugged deployed embedded digital signal processing applications.”

Available in both air-cooled and conduction-cooled rugged versions, the FMC-520 features two Texas Instruments DAC5682Z 16-bit digital-to-analog converters. Each device can be configured to support two channels with a 500MSPS update rate or a single channel with a 1GSPS update rate.

The FMC-520 easily interfaces to FPGA-based host board such as Curtiss-Wright Controls’ Xilinx® Virtex®-5 FPGA processor-based FPE650 (Quad FPGA VPX), HPE720 (MPC8641D/dual FPGA VPX) and FPE320 (3U FPGA VPX) boards. By routing the DAC device interfaces directly to the FMC connector, the FMC-520 enables an FPGA on the host board to ensure maximum throughput and directly control and receive data. The FMC-520 features an onboard programmable clock generator with the option of using a 10 MHz reference clock input to control the sampling rate for its DAC channels. An external RF clock input is provided to enable direct DAC sampling.

FMC-520 Key Features:

· Dual Texas Instruments DAC5682Z 16-bit digital-to-analog converters

· Four (4) analog output channels updating at 500 MSPS or two (2) analog output channels updating at 1.0 GSPS

· Choice of sample clock options: onboard, external direct or external 10MHz reference.

· FMC/VITA 57 form factor

· Air- or conduction-cooled rugged versions

Software Support

The FMC-520 is provided with HDL example code to simplify and speed integration into the HDL development suite for integration with Curtiss-Wright Controls’ FPGA host boards.

About FMC (VITA 57)

FMC modules enable I/O devices that reside on an industry standard (VITA 57) mezzanine card to be attached to, and directly controlled by FPGAs that reside on a host board. About half the size of a PMC mezzanine module, FMCs provide a small footprint, reduced I/O bottlenecks, increased flexibility, and reduced cost through the elimination of redundant interfaces. To maximize data throughput and minimize latency, the FMC connector provides numerous I/O pins that support high-speed signals for moving data between the FMC and the FPGA.

Pricing for FMC-520 starts at $5,000 US. Availability is Q4, 2009.
