Sierra Nevada Corporation selects SprayCool as Key Supplier for ESM System
4 months 1 week ago

SprayCool®, a recognized leader in advanced thermal management and environmental isolation products for the Military, announced that it was selected by Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) to supply its liquid cooled enclosure to support their Electronic Support Measure (ESM) system on the U.S. Navy’s Broad Area Maritime Surveillance Unmanned Aircraft System (BAMS UAS). The current development program was awarded to Northrop Grumman in April of 2008, and Sierra Nevada is working with Northrop Grumman to provide the ESM system.

SNC selected a SprayCool chassis based on its Multi-Platform Enclosure (MPE). The chassis will be installed on the RQ-4N Global Hawk (a marinized version of Northrop Grumman’s combat-proven RQ-4 Global Hawk).

The MPE is a multi-slot scalable enclosure enabled with SprayCool’s patented “direct-spray” 2-phase closed-loop liquid cooling system. The MPE includes an integrated pump and controller, which in this case will be connected to a liquid-to-liquid heat exchanger that cools the liquid via fuel.

“By choosing the SprayCool chassis, we now have the ability to use COTS cards for our ESM system. This allows us to provide a much more cost effective package, while meeting the harsh operational requirement,” commented Curt Carr, SNC’s BAMS Program Manager. “Choosing this versatile enclosure eliminated the need for us to develop custom ruggedized cards and chassis, therefore enabling us to satisfy our customer’s demanding schedule,” he added.

“This contract highlights SprayCool’s growing adoption by key military UAV programs, and we are honored to be selected in support of such a major program as BAMS,” said Matt Gerber, President and CEO of SprayCool. “And the ability to select non-ruggedized cards is a benefit we see being recognized repeatedly across a wide spectrum of our military customers,” he added.

SprayCool Technology

SprayCool patented HTUtwo-phase liquid cooling technology (see Video)UTH uses a fine mist of non-corrosive, non-conductive liquid, sprayed in a thin layer, which evaporates and cools electronics. The process continuously cycles within a sealed, closed loop system. In doing so, SprayCool products isolate the electronics from dirty, corrosive environments found in military and industrial applications resulting in cooler, higher performance, and more durable electronic devices. The technology provides an efficiently controlled and isolated environment for a broad mix of electronics in a package that is significantly smaller, lighter, and more power and cost efficient, and faster to deploy by the integrator.
