Curtiss-Wright Controls Doubles Memory on Buffer Memory XMC Card and Passes Rugged Qualification

CHATSWORTH, CA –March 25, 2010 -- Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Computing, a business group of Curtiss-Wright Controls and a leading designer and manufacturer of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) VME, VPX, OpenVPX™ and CompactPCI® products for the rugged deployed aerospace and defense (A&D) market, has doubled the memory from 4G to 8G on the MM-6171, its first high-density, high-speed DDR2 SDRAM Buffer Memory XMC card. The rugged, small form factor mezzanine module, available in air- and now conduction-cooled variants, supports the latest high-speed serial fabrics, such as PCI Express® (PCIe) and Serial RapidIO® (SRIO), to deliver higher bi-directional bandwidths than available with earlier PMC card designs. The MM-6171 speeds and eases the integration of high-density contiguous memory into embedded systems designed for harsh environments. The card is designed to provide volatile, deep storage for a wide range of Military applications including Radar, signal intelligence, and image processing.

“Today’s demanding military compute applications frequently require large amounts of high-speed contiguous memory, more than is available on their single board computer or DSP engine host card,” said Lynn Patterson, vice president and general manager of Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Computing. “The MM-6171 enables system designers to simply add the memory they need with an XMC card, reaping the benefits of the XMC’s higher bandwidth.”

The MM-6171 can be readily deployed on a range of Curtiss-Wright Controls’ baseboard products. For example, when combined with Curtiss-Wright Controls’ MFC700 6U VPX-REDI 32G memory FPGA XMC Carrier, the MM-6171 provides one of the industry’s highest density ruggedized high-speed memory offerings.

Conforming to the XMC (VITA 42) mezzanine standard, the MM-6171 interfaces to the host board through the P15 connector. It features a four (4) lane high-speed serial link running at up to 3.125 GHz to provide a high-speed full duplex interface. The MM-6171 supports both Serial RapidIO® and PCI Express® interfaces. An on-card Xilinx® Virtex™-5 LX110T FPGA connects the high-speed signals to the memory. The FPGA serves as a memory controller and is not designed to host User Programmable Logic (UPL). The LX110T controls two independent memory arrays, each capable of interfacing to 1-2GB of DDR2 memory. Each memory array is 72-bits wide, with a 64-bit data path and ECC. Single bit errors are corrected and double-bit errors are detected through the memory controller’s logic. The DDR2 arrays provide over 3GB/s of data bandwidth.

MM-6171 Key Features:

· 2, 4, 8 GB high-speed DDR2 SDRAM

· x4 Serial RapidIO® or x4 PCI Express® interfaces

· Full-featured DMA engine

· Rugged convection and conduction-cooled versions

Software Support

A MM-6171 device driver for VxWorks ® 6.x is available from Curtiss-Wright Controls.

Ruggedization Levels

The MM-6171 is designed for demanding, high-performance aerospace and defense applications and is offered in a range of rugged configurations including air-cooled (Level 0/100) and conduction-cooled (Level 100/200). Innovative cooling techniques are employed to handle high performance implementations.

Volume pricing for commercial and rugged versions of the MM-6171 is available. For pricing and availability please contact the factory. For more information on the MM-6171, please visit our website at www.cwcembedded.com.
