The General Micro Systems Spartan is a fully functioning, high-performance hardened PC with an embedded GPS receiver, 802.11b/g wireless Ethernet port enabling and facilitating high data rate communications

• Ultra small footprint – 6.5”x3.0”x 0.5” (first rugged UMPC)

• Fits in Warfighter’s pant pouch, with 6-hour battery life

• Up to 1.4GHz Pentium®-M processor with up to 2Mbytes of L2 Cache

• Up to 2Gbytes of ECC memory and 16Gbytes of bootable Flash

• CompuSec and E-Purge prevents unauthorized or enemy access

Long Beach, Calif. May 16, 2006 – General Micro Systems, Inc., a leader in the design and manufacture of embedded computing products for defense, aerospace, and compute-intensive applications, now offers a full-featured PC meeting the Military’s stringent demands for net-centric Manpack computers. Introduced at MEECC (Military Embedded Electronics and Computer Conference) 2006, Spartan (P630) the industry’s first rugged UMPC (Ultra Mobile PC) is engineered specifically for varied OEM applications that need excellent performance, but require low power consumption in a Manpack compact size.

Providing the capabilities of a notebook, Spartan is a full-functioning, high-performance hardened PC with an embedded GPS receiver, 802.11b/g Wireless Ethernet port enabling and facilitating high data rate communications. Measuring only 6.5”x3.0”x 0.5”, it fits into the warfighter’s pant pouch – even after incorporation of a display, up to 60GB of HDD, touch screen and containment in a hardened 100% sealed enclosure.

Spartan distinguishes itself from commercially available portable communications and computational devices by loading full-featured Pentium®-M laptop performance, running Windows® XP Pro, into its compact rugged size. The on-board Video supports OpenGL® and DirectX® for video overlays and mapping/targeting functions.

For flexibility in all applications, Spartan is available with up to a 60GB shock mounted Hard Disk Drive. In addition, touch screen, LCD panel and hand writing recognition software can be installed.

For further customization, Spartan incorporates external I/O ports for video, USB devices (such as Flash Sticks) and FireWire for camera interface (which allows camera video to overlay data). This feature means military personnel can pinpoint a target by overlaying a map with the GPS data. Additionally, RS485/422 com ports provide an audio dimension: Mic and headphone for voice commands and VoIP provide direct communication with most all the armed forces’ radios.

To ensure secure operation, CompuSec (Computer Security) is designed-in to prevent tampering of the Operating System and the BIOS. Additionally, E-Purge provides the ability to initiate hard drive data destruction prior to the system falling into the hands of unauthorized personnel.

Spartan may be equipped with up to 2GB of 266MHz DDR memory and is designed with the future in mind: it will support the next generation of Pentium Core Due® processors from Intel® for even lower power, lower cost and faster operations. Software support for the P630 is available under Windows XP Pro, Linux®, QNX® and VxWorks®.

Spartan P630 is available in a conduction-cooled version operating at (-40°C to +85°C) or the standard convection-cooled version with commercial operating temperatures (0° C to +55° C). Packaging options vary from plastic for benign environments to titanium-aluminum enclosures for the most critical applications.

Pricing for the conduction-cooled version starts at $3,400, in quantities of 100 units and ship 60 days ARO.

About General Micro Systems

Established in 1979, GMS operates from its corporate headquarters in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. GMS has become an industry leader in the design and manufacture of computing engines for VME, CompactPCI, custom and small form factor boards and systems for the embedded real-time markets. With an extensive standard line of computing engines based on Intel® Pentium® and PowerPC® processors (IBM® and Motorola®), GMS has a 25-year reputation of bringing to market the most advanced technologies with many innovations such as mezzanine boards and CPU carriers. Although GMS’s base products center around VME and CompactPCI bus architectures, most of the company’s revenue comes from custom to semi-custom products. GMS’s large array of products – from the lowest-priced and smallest SBC to super-performing SBCs for critical applications – leverage custom ASIC design, FPGA and other base technologies to bring the highest performance at the lowest cost possible.
