Curtiss-Wright Boosts VxWorks Support on 6U VME Quad PowerPC DSP Engine
3 years 5 months ago

LEESBURG, VA—October 6, 2006 – Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Computing has announced that it has enhanced its support for Wind River's VxWorks®/Tornado™ real-time software development environment with the release of a new VxWorks 6.3 board support package (BSP) and driver suite for its popular CHAMP-AV IV quad PowerPC 6U VME digital signal processing (DSP) engine. The new BSP provides developers with an extensive application programming interface (API) that speeds and simplifies real-time application development.

"Curtiss-Wright is committed to tracking the latest versions of Wind River 's real-time development environment to help embedded developers building aerospace and defense systems with CHAMP-AV IV DSP engines accelerate their time-to-market," said Lynn Patterson , vice president and general manager of Modular Solutions, Curtiss-Wright. "With our complete VxWorks BSP and driver suite for the CHAMP-AV IV, Curtiss-Wright enables customers to speed their real-time software development right from the start. Instead of writing low-level device driver code, our customers can focus on application development and system integration."

With many more features and tools than typically offered on a standard BSP, the CHAMP-AV IV/VxWorks 6.3 BSP provides an extensive suite of software initialization code, device drivers and library support. Sample applications, pre-compiled downloadable images and pre-configured Workbench projects allow development teams to be more productive earlier in their development cycle. In addition to supporting the latest release of VxWorks/Workbench, the new BSP also provides, at no additional cost, support for Wind River 's earlier VxWorks 5.5.

The BSP includes support for the VxMP Shared Memory Object feature to facilitate basic communications between the CHAMP's four processors. For higher performance communication and support for high-speed serial fabric connectivity, Curtiss Wright offers the additional Inter-processor Communications (IPC) software tool library that can be used with VxWorks.

In addition to providing support for Windows hosts, the CHAMP-AV IV/VxWorks 6.3 BSP is the first Curtiss-Wright VxWorks BSP to also provide support for Linux hosts.

The CHAMP-AV IV

The CHAMP-AV IV is Curtiss-Wright's third generation of quad PowerPC DSP board to feature its unique, advanced QuadFlow architecture to provide high bandwidth connections between the four on-board 7447A/7448 processors. Each of the board's processors, capable of up to 10 GFLOPs peak, is equipped with its own bank of DDR SDRAM with 2GB/sec peak bandwidth. The quad processors are interconnected via 100MHz PCI-X busses. Utilizing the QuadFlow ability to handle up to four simultaneous transfers, the CHAMP-AV IV can deliver up to 3.2GB/sec of on-card inter-processor bandwidth.

The CHAMP-AV IV/VxWorks 6.3 BSP is available now. Developers can download the technical datasheet at www.cwcembedded.com.

Pricing for the BSP is US $6000.
